Position Purposes/ Summary: Responsible for the maintenance and repair of the of the Springfield Schools heating systems and related equipment including pneumatic control systems, digital controls, thermostats and heating transmission lines. Work will be performed with considerable latitude in accordance with generally recognized trade practices under the supervision of the department of facilities management leadership team. Work will be reviewed by general inspection and no supervision is exercised over staff.
Essential Functions:
- Repairs and maintains pneumatic thermostat and building controls
- Removes, repairs, and reinstalls pumps
- Stops and repairs leaks in heating lines as they occur
- Maintains existing steam lines and associated components
- Completes reactive and preventative maintenance and associated documentation
- Assists in emergency’s as needed- on-call
- Works according to schedules prepared by supervisor
- Ensures that work areas remain clean, neat, orderly and safe
- Participates in regular training activities
- Performs all related work as required to the best of one’s abilities
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Strong working knowledge of standard industry practices, materials, tools, equipment and techniques associated with the HVAC trade.
- The organizational skills to evaluate a situation, determine method for repair, determine necessary materials list, request pricing from specified vendors, organize pricing into the required format, and plan the flow of a repair up and through completion.
- Ability to keep records of activities performed.
- Ability to read, understand and evaluate mechanical drawings.
- Strong knowledge and respect for the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Ability to locate, diagnose and correct defects and malfunctions on a variety of heating system equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, school department staff, and building custodians
- Willingness to participate in a team environment and work alongside other trades to accomplish the department’s objectives for the maintenance of Springfield Public Schools and Municipal Buildings.
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Technical Courses relevant to the field of HVAC
- Minimum of seven years’ experience as a skilled heating system technician or HVAC technician.
Special Qualifications:
- HVAC or equivalent technical license required
- MA State Driver’s license
Technology, Equipment, Systems and Tools:
- This position requires basic computer skills, strong knowledge of all heating system related equipment, tools and materials.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in a field environment where conditions may vary.
- This position may be required to work in wet, cold or in otherwise unconditioned spaces.
- Regular attendance is required.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear; stoop and bend over; and reaches with hands and arms. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 75 lbs.
